Excuse the Absence
July 30, 2006
As I'm sure many of you can relate, starting a new job can be a little draining, especially when you are entering an entirely new industry. I feel like I'm back at school, having done a lot of reading last week. By 4pm each day, I was about ready to get up from my desk and scream like a raving lunatic. Reading from books to learn is one thing, but getting absolutely no hands-on and human instruction is a bit boring. Thankfully, my cousin (whom I'll be working with directly in the same position) is done with his systems training he had to go through and can now get into the nitty gritty with me. By the time Friday came around, I felt like I was getting familiar with how I needed to do my job, and especially getting familiar with the system I'll be handling.
Since it's nearly 11pm and I should really be hitting the sack, I'll just brush by what's up:
- Batgirl and I celebrated our 6-month anniversary on Friday. Actually, the real date was Thursday, but being that it was a work night for me, we held off. Our idea was kind of cool: we recreated our first date. The night started by us literally meeting up at the restaurant we first met at. Back when we had our blind date in January, we were only having drinks, but this time I was willing to throw down some cash on a pricey meal. First things first: we had to do a shot of SoCo at the dive bar next door. Story is, because the meeting point was so crowded, we opted to go to this one bar and have our drinks there. A shot of chilled SoCo with lime broke the ice on that first date, so we thought what better way to start the celebration of 6 months together. We then downed the same beer we drank that night. Dinner was great, and then after that we went to the bars we closed our first date at.
For a gift, I put together a Powerpoint slide show of pictures from our 6 months together, with U2's "All I Want Is You" to play in the background. Unfortunately, Batgirl is not the most technologically sound woman I know (she has a 43-inch flat screen with HD capabilities--but no DVD player), so my hard work went unseen. The project took me several hours to compose, so perhaps I can give it to her for her birthday in a few weeks. - On a sad note, Batgirl learned her aunt has cancer spreading throughout her body, and it's going to her brain. In all likelihood, she won't live very long, and Batgirl's mom (apparently a closet smoker since I never saw a butt in her mouth) is not handling it well. Good thing for her is she hasn't smoked in over a week once the news broke. Monday we will learn of the doctor's prognosis for how long the aunt has to live.
- Apparently, Lindsay Lohan likes getting it from behind. I mean, how else can one explain this photo posted on What Would Tyler Durden Do? Those bruises tell me she likes it hard and rough. Nice.
- Major League Baseball's trading deadline is Monday at 3pm-ish. The Yankees went out today and finally pulled the trigger on acquiring Bobby Abreu from the Phillies for a bunch of mid-level prospects I've never heard of. What kills me is not that they grabbed a perennial All-Star outfielder to replace the injured Gary Sheffield and Hideki Matsui, but that they also got a quality fifth-starter in Cory Lidle to round out their shaky rotation in the deal. The Yanks payroll has now got to be about $230 million. Now, after watching Curt Schilling get shelled tonight by the Angels, it's imperative the Red Sox swing a deal deal for a starting pitcher, a good middle reliever, and/or a guy they can plug into the 5-hole because Trot Nixon ain't getting it done.
- NFL training camps are finally under way, and I have come to the realization it's time to starting studying up on fantasy football. Anyone got some sleepers, busts, or suggestions on must-grabs for 2006? I'm about as unprepared as I've ever been coming into a season. Football fever is, however, coming over me.
